I have been on a building site for as long as I can remember as my father has his own construction business and is also a qualified bricklayer. Straight after leaving school I enrolled in my local college on a bricklaying apprenticeship, during this time I learned all aspects of residential construction. On completion of my apprenticeship I stayed on with my fathers business and became a partner in the business with this came increased responsibilities I was in charge of a team on 5 workers two bricklayers one carpenter one labourer and one apprentice carpenter. My father would give me a set of plans and a hole in the ground and say off you go! In 2008 as the GFC hit the construction industry in the uk work dried up so I answered a advert in the local newspaper, they were advertising for bricklayers in holland. So me and a bricklayer mate of mine and a very experienced hood carrier went to holland. There It became apparent that different countries had different ways and styles of bricklaying, we spent 6 weeks on site until it became apparent we where not going to be paid as the company we were working for went bust! On returning to the uk I returned to work as a subcontractor at which point whilst working on site I broke all my fingers in my trowel hand and was forced to stop bricklaying for a few years, during which time I met my wife and moved to Australia to live with her in her home town. During my time in Australia I have undertaken lots of small cash jobs. Now my hand is fully healed I am looking to return to bricklaying. I am extremely Hard working and passionate about construction. In the future I hope to get my builders license and start my own business.
