Building boom is creating a skills shortage

Australia’s residential building boom is breaking all the records and shows no sign of slowing down.  In fact, the construction trade is boosting overall economic figures and is increasing at a rate of 15.6 per cent year-on-year. According to The Master Builders Chief Economist, Peter Jones “we have now reached a milestone in terms of dwelling commencements which in the year to March reached an all time record of 203,706 with an increase of 15.6 per cent year-on-year.”

There were several areas highlighted during the study as being particularly buoyant. Construction growth was noticeably higher in Tasmania (+36.8 per cent), Victoria (+26.6 per cent) and Queensland (+20.4 per cent).  Victoria’s growth in construction is being driven by a surge in population growth which means that construction will continue to grow in that area.

Managing staff in a boom

This boom is fuelled largely by sales to offshore buyers, but with the level of uncertainty in the world right now, particularly in China and Greece, how long can we expect this to last? With that in mind, we find that many construction crews are taking on contractors which enables them to complete construction jobs without committing to long term staff.
